What is an index in a book

In the simplest terms, a book index is simply a key to locating information contained in a book. It is also known as back-of-the-book index. The words of the Index should be relevant and of what is the index used for in a book. It's to help you find stuff in the book. Suppose you read something in the book about whales, and later wanted to read it again, but couldn't remember what page it was on.
